Ranger ‘Lance’ looking into the gated entrance to Spider Cave. This entrance is famous for rattlesnakes just inside. Spider is the most unique cave I’ve been in so far. Most of the formations are stark white against a dark back ground. Beautiful. Spider got it’s name from a colony of cave spiders that lived near the entrance. They are no longer there, presumably due to human intrusion. Spider is near Carlsbad on the same Park land.

Janet coming down the entrance shaft to Spider. Yet another picture of Janet’s butt.
Note the dark stain where rising water levels and silty water have darkened the formation.
Lots of awesome soda straws, some six feet in length.
